General INfo about Theory

E0650
Pneumatic compressor, non-segmenta
L
A non-segmented pump is a device that has a single outflow port from the compressor to an arm or leg appliance.  It fills with air, holds, then exhausts and repeats the cycle.

This type of compression does not give direction to the tissue fluids.  It is not gradient pressure and therefore is somewhat like squeezing a tube of toothpaste in the middle – moving fluid in both directions.

E0651
Pneumatic compressor, segmental without calibrated gradient pressure

A segmented pneumatic compressor is a device that has multiple outflow ports from the compressor, which lead to segmented chambers of the appliance.  The distal cell fills first to a prescribed pressure, then the medial cell fills to the same pressure, and then the proximal cell.

The pressure holds for a few seconds then exhausts, pauses, and begins the cycle again.

Since each cell fills with air to the same pressure as the preceding cell, the cells oppose each other when filled.  This system provides some direction to the compression, but not much.

E0652
Pneumatic compressor, segmental with calibrated gradient pressure

A segmented pneumatic compressor is a device that has multiple outflow ports from the compressor, which lead to the segmented chambers of the appliance.  The distal cell fills first to a prescribed pressure, then the medial cell fills to a prescribed pressure which is less than the distal cell.  The proximal cell fills with less pressure than the medial.  Each cell fills with less pressure than the preceding cell.  Calibrated means that each cell should be adjustable and accurate. This type of compression is the most effective because it gives direction to the compression and is an aid to the return of lymph and venous blood.
